It was common for all manufacturers to offer a new palette of paint choices each model year (or two). Some colors continued, some were dropped and others were added. However, I think that one would also have to take into consideration many of the other features that are characteristic of a model year.Īt that point in time Porsche changed the paint codes every two years 62xx, 64xx, 66xx, 68xx. If for some reason one car was delayed in completion past the model year change then the early car might get 6401 and the later car get 6601, each of which would be valid for the period. For example it might be possible for two consecutive bodies coming out of the paint booth, painted in slate grey, and getting consecutive VIN's. Was the paint code badge affixed at the same time or later? If later, then that could explain some of the odd codes that one sees. I'd love to know at what point in the build process that the VIN was assigned and stamped into the body. My figures of 351085 are approximate, and based on the majority of paint codes earlier than these are 64xx, and the majority after are 66xx. If you have a VIN of 456500 or lower, please let me know the code on the badge and the VIN. I would like to find the earliest use of the prefix & suffix on a Karmann built car. I have 456242 as the first car with the prefix & suffix. However, the data I have collected for the Karmann bodied cars seems to indicate that the prefix & suffix begins well before VIN 458101 that has been accepted as the first VIN of 1967 model year. If you have something different, please contact me. Generally you will find one of these three codes: 63-66xx-L, 68-66xx-G' 97-66xx-L. The z was a letter corresponding to the paint manufacturer L = Lesonal & G = Glasurit. The aa prefix was a 2 digit numerical paint line or type. For the 1967 model year (911 VIN's from 305101, and 912's VIN's from 354001) the paint code stamped on the badge was aa-66xx-z with the usual exceptions. For the Porsche built cars (911 VIN's up to 305000, and 912's VIN's up to 354000) the paint code stamped on the badge was 66xx except for special colours like 6206 silver or various 5 digit Lesonal codes. From 1966 model year introduction (this is my own interpretation, and not necessarily accepted by anyone else) the paint codes changed from 64xx series to 66xx series.
